There is now a great deal of discussion about the so-called “Ozempic® Face” or “Ozempic® Body”. What is discussed far less often is that significant weight loss can also change the female intimate area.
Some women notice after substantial weight loss that the outer labia have lost volume and firmness. The tissue may appear looser or less full, which can make the inner labia appear more prominent.
For some women, this change is not a problem at all. Others no longer feel comfortable with it. It should be just as acceptable to talk about these changes as it is to discuss changes to the face, abdomen, arms or other areas of the body.
The labia majora, or outer labia, consist of skin, connective tissue and fatty tissue. Significant weight loss can therefore also lead to a loss of volume in this area.
How noticeable this change becomes varies considerably from one woman to another. Factors include:
When the outer labia lose fullness, they may appear less plump and more lax. At the same time, the inner labia may become more prominent. This does not necessarily mean that the inner labia themselves have changed, but rather that the surrounding volume has decreased.
Importantly, this is not in itself a medical condition and does not need to be treated. What matters is how the individual woman feels about the change.
If a woman no longer feels comfortable with changes to her intimate area following significant weight loss, there are various options available today. These can be discussed discreetly to determine whether treatment may be appropriate.
One option for volume loss in the outer labia is targeted treatment with hyaluronic acid fillers. A suitable product is injected into the tissue to restore lost volume.
The aim is not to create an artificially altered intimate area. Rather, the treatment is intended to support the natural fullness of the outer labia and create a more harmonious balance between the outer and inner labia.
Depending on the individual anatomy, the tissue may appear fuller, softer and less lax. A “deflated” appearance of the outer labia may also be improved.
As with any filler treatment, side effects and complications are possible when treating the intimate area. A careful examination, an appropriate product and treatment by an experienced doctor are therefore particularly important.
Another option is autologous fat transfer. Fat is removed from a suitable area of the body, prepared and then carefully injected into the outer labia.
Following significant weight loss, fat transfer can be an interesting option if sufficient fat is available for harvesting and a somewhat greater increase in volume is desired.
Some of the transferred fat cells can permanently integrate into the tissue. However, the exact survival rate cannot be predicted. It is therefore important to discuss realistically before treatment what result can be achieved and whether more than one treatment session may be appropriate.
Whether hyaluronic acid or fat transfer is the better option depends on the individual findings, tissue quality, desired result and the patient's personal expectations.
Not every change that a woman finds bothersome can be addressed by restoring volume to the outer labia.
If the inner labia are naturally more pronounced or cause discomfort during exercise, when wearing tight clothing or during sexual intercourse, surgical labiaplasty may also be considered following an appropriate examination.
It is important to respect the natural diversity of the female intimate area. There is no “correct” shape and no ideal size for the labia.
Treatment should therefore never be based on a supposed beauty ideal, but only after a detailed consultation and in response to the patient's own wishes.
In intimate aesthetics, medical experience is only one aspect of good treatment. Discretion, understanding and empathy are equally important.
Many women find it difficult to talk about no longer feeling comfortable with their intimate area after significant weight loss. Some have thought about the issue for a long time before mentioning it to a doctor at all.
It is therefore especially important to provide an environment in which questions, concerns and wishes can be discussed without embarrassment.
At BEAUTYCLINIC, Dipl. med. Karoline Freitag personally looks after patients seeking advice in this area. She provides discreet and individual consultations on the possibilities offered by modern intimate aesthetics and intimate surgery.
Particularly with such a sensitive subject, the focus is not on a standardised beauty ideal, but on what is medically appropriate for the individual patient and what may support her personal well-being.
Successful weight loss can be an enormously positive step for many people. At the same time, it is perfectly reasonable to acknowledge that not every physical change associated with weight loss is necessarily welcome.
This applies to loose skin on the abdomen or arms just as much as it does to loss of volume in the intimate area.
If the outer labia have noticeably lost fullness following weight loss, various treatment options are available. In suitable patients, targeted volume restoration with hyaluronic acid or autologous fat can help compensate for lost volume and give the outer labia a fuller appearance.
With other anatomical characteristics, a different treatment may be more appropriate – or no treatment at all.
The first step is therefore not a procedure, but a confidential consultation and careful examination.
Anyone who notices changes to the intimate area after Ozempic®, another GLP-1 therapy or significant weight loss and no longer feels comfortable with them does not have to keep the issue to herself.
Dipl. med. Karoline Freitag provides discreet and individual consultations at BEAUTYCLINIC on the possibilities offered by modern intimate aesthetics and intimate surgery.
Together, you will discuss whether treatment is appropriate at all and whether, for example, restoring volume to the outer labia with hyaluronic acid or autologous fat could be suitable.
Particularly in intimate aesthetics, the focus should not be on conforming to an ideal, but on feeling comfortable in your own body again.
We understand that aesthetic treatment needs to be carefully considered. We are therefore happy to take the time to answer all your questions during a free, no-obligation initial consultation. Arrange your consultation appointment today at one of our BEAUTYCLINICs.
