XERF® for the Body: Skin Tightening Without Surgery After Liposuction or Weight Loss

Firmer skin on the abdomen, upper arms or thighs – without surgery and without a long recovery period? This is precisely where one of the most exciting applications of modern radiofrequency technology lies.

With XERF® by Cynosure Lutronic, a technology is coming to Europe that has already attracted considerable attention in Korea and other Asian markets. XERF® was developed in Korea and uses two radiofrequencies – 6.78 MHz and 2 MHz – within a single treatment pulse. This allows different tissue depths to be targeted.

And this is particularly interesting not only for the face.

In body aesthetics, the focus is increasingly on skin tightening of the abdomen, upper arms, thighs and knees, as well as after liposuction.

Why is skin tightening after weight loss or liposuction such an important topic?

Liposuction can significantly change the contours of the body. However, it cannot guarantee that the overlying skin will completely adapt to the new shape afterwards.

Especially when larger fat deposits were present before treatment or the skin has already lost some of its elasticity, one issue may remain after liposuction: the volume has been reduced, but the skin appears loose, less firm or slightly excessive.

Many people experience something similar after significant weight loss. The weight has been reduced and the body shape has changed – but the skin may need support in adapting to the new silhouette.

Until now, significant excess skin eventually raised the question of surgical tightening procedures, such as a tummy tuck, upper arm lift or thigh lift.

But not everyone wants another operation. And not every case is severe enough to require surgical skin removal.

This is precisely the gap in which modern non-invasive tightening treatments become particularly interesting.

What is XERF®?

XERF® is a monopolar radiofrequency system for non-invasive skin tightening. This means that no skin is removed and no surgical incisions are made. Instead, radiofrequency energy is delivered into the tissue from outside the body.

What makes XERF® distinctive is its combination of two frequencies: 6.78 MHz and 2 MHz. According to the manufacturer, this dual-frequency technology enables energy to be delivered at different tissue depths. Various depth settings and energy levels are also available.

The aim is to create a controlled thermal effect within the tissue. Heat can influence collagen structures and stimulate longer-term remodelling processes. This is precisely what makes radiofrequency an interesting approach for treating reduced skin firmness.

Why is XERF® particularly interesting after liposuction?

After liposuction, the relationship between the skin and the underlying volume changes. If the skin has sufficient elasticity, it can often adapt well. However, if elasticity has already decreased, a certain degree of skin laxity may remain visible.

In these cases, a non-invasive tightening treatment may be an interesting complementary option – provided that the tissue has fully healed and a medical assessment confirms that the treatment is appropriate.

It is important to make a clear distinction: XERF® does not replace a medically indicated surgical skin tightening procedure.

Anyone with significant excess skin on the abdomen, upper arms or thighs will not simply be able to “tighten it away”. Where substantial excess skin is present, surgical removal may still be necessary.

With mild to moderate skin laxity, however, the situation is different. Non-invasive procedures can be an interesting option, particularly for people who would prefer to avoid another operation.

Which areas of the body can be treated with XERF®?

When people hear about radiofrequency skin tightening, they often think first of the face, neck and jawline. However, the body may become one of the most interesting areas of application.

Typical treatment areas include:

  • Abdomen: loose skin after weight loss, pregnancy or liposuction
  • Upper arms: reduced skin firmness on the underside of the arms
  • Thighs: loose skin, particularly on the inner thighs
  • Knees: fine skin folds and reduced firmness above the knees
  • Body contours after liposuction: when fat has been reduced but the skin requires additional support

The degree of improvement that can be achieved depends on several factors, including skin quality, age, collagen structure, the extent of skin laxity and the tissue’s individual healing and remodelling capacity.

Why is the 2 MHz frequency particularly interesting?

Radiofrequency is not new to aesthetic medicine. What makes XERF® particularly interesting, however, is Cynosure Lutronic’s combination of two frequencies: 6.78 MHz and 2 MHz.

The lower 2 MHz frequency is designed to deliver radiofrequency energy at greater depths. The concept therefore goes beyond superficial skin quality and incorporates different tissue depths into the tightening treatment.

The manufacturer refers to this approach as “Structural Skin Tightening”.

This is particularly interesting for the body because the anatomical conditions differ from areas such as around the eyes or the lower face. The abdomen, upper arms, thighs and knees place different demands on energy delivery, treatment depth and tissue response.

No needles, no incisions, no conventional surgery

One important reason for the international interest in XERF® is its non-invasive approach.

The treatment is performed without surgical incisions and without microneedling needles. Radiofrequency energy is delivered externally. An integrated cooling system protects the skin surface during treatment and improves patient comfort.

Cynosure Lutronic also positions XERF® as a treatment without significant downtime. For many patients, this is precisely what makes it attractive: no surgery, no visible scars and a rapid return to everyday activities.

Nevertheless, it is important to remember that even non-invasive energy-based treatments can cause temporary skin reactions. These may include redness, a sensation of warmth, mild swelling or tenderness. Possible reactions should always be discussed during a personal consultation.

Why does XERF® come from Korea?

It is no coincidence that this technology comes from Korea. South Korea is one of the world’s most innovative markets for device-based aesthetic medicine. New technologies for skin quality, skin tightening and non-invasive treatments are often adopted and further developed there at an early stage.

XERF® was launched in Korea in May 2024 and has since expanded rapidly internationally. According to the manufacturer, more than 2,000 systems had already been installed worldwide by June 2026. Demand has developed particularly strongly in the Asia-Pacific region and North America.

What began as a Korean beauty trend is therefore increasingly becoming an international topic in aesthetic medicine.

Why is the European launch so exciting?

Cynosure Lutronic announced the European launch of XERF® in July 2026. Availability in individual countries depends on the respective regulatory requirements.

XERF® is also becoming increasingly visible at European medical congresses. In September 2026, the technology will be presented at the European Laser & Science Symposium in Barcelona, including specialist lectures, expert discussions and live treatments.

Europe is therefore still at the beginning of a development with XERF® that is already considerably more advanced in Korea and other Asian markets.

Why is the demand for non-surgical skin tightening so high?

Aesthetic medicine is changing.

Today, many people are not looking for maximum transformation, but rather a more natural optimisation: firmer skin, improved contours, healthier-looking tissue and harmonious results – ideally without surgery and without a long recovery period.

An Appinio survey commissioned by Cynosure Lutronic involving more than 4,700 adults in Europe and Saudi Arabia demonstrates the level of interest. According to the manufacturer, 58 percent of respondents rated tightening sagging skin as very or extremely important. 67 percent expressed a preference for treatments without needles.

This helps explain why non-invasive radiofrequency treatments are currently attracting so much attention.

XERF® or surgical skin tightening: what is the difference?

This distinction is crucial.

A surgical tummy tuck, upper arm lift or thigh lift can actually remove excess skin. A radiofrequency device cannot.

However, surgery also involves incisions, scars, a corresponding healing period and, depending on the procedure, significant downtime.

XERF® takes a different approach: controlled radiofrequency energy is used to improve the structure and firmness of the existing skin – without surgically removing it.

For mild to moderate skin laxity, this concept can therefore be interesting. In cases of significant excess skin, surgery will generally remain the more effective option.

Why body contouring and skin quality belong together

Treatment planning is changing, particularly in body aesthetics.

In the past, the primary question was often: How do we get rid of unwanted fat deposits?

Today, an additional question should be asked: What happens to the skin afterwards?

An attractive body contour depends not only on the amount of fatty tissue. The quality, elasticity and firmness of the overlying skin also play a decisive role.

This is why the combination of body contouring and targeted skin tightening is likely to become even more important in the future, particularly after liposuction, weight loss or in cases of early skin laxity.

Is XERF® an alternative to a tummy tuck?

For suitable patients, non-invasive tightening may be an alternative when there is no significant excess skin.

However, in cases of a pronounced abdominal apron or severely lax skin, expectations must remain realistic: a radiofrequency treatment cannot remove centimetres of excess skin.

This is precisely why a personal examination is so important.

Sometimes surgery is the appropriate solution. Sometimes a non-invasive treatment is sufficient. And sometimes the best solution is a combined treatment concept.

Our conclusion

XERF® is more than just a new beauty device. The technology represents a development that is becoming increasingly important in aesthetic medicine: moving away from more invasive procedures towards intelligent, energy-based treatments designed to minimise the burden on patients.

XERF® is particularly interesting not only for the face, neck and jawline. The abdomen, upper arms, thighs, knees and skin after liposuction may also become important areas of application for modern radiofrequency skin tightening.

The development of XERF® began in Korea in 2024. The technology has since gained international visibility and is now coming to Europe.

However, one point remains crucial: not every case of loose skin can be treated without surgery. Whether XERF® alone, another tightening method or a combined treatment concept is appropriate always depends on the individual findings.

At BEAUTYCLINIC, we carefully assess skin quality, tissue, the treatment area and the desired result. Together, we discuss which options for non-surgical skin tightening are realistic – and when a surgical tightening procedure may be the better choice.
